Six weird and wacky things to do on cruise ships

Sometimes you’ll just want to relax by the pool or fill your stomach at the buffet, but when you’re looking for something just a bit more thrilling, give these activities a go.

Drink cocktails inside an ice bar

You’ve been soaking up the sun in the same chair on the top deck for days. What do you do next? Head to the ice bar, of course! SVEDKA on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic is set at a chilly eight degrees below zero. The best part – other than the cocktails – is you don’t even have to pack for it; parkas and gloves are handed out at the door.

Get back to nature

Real grass growing on a cruise ship? Yep – half an acre of it, specially installed for guests travelling on Celebrity Cruises’ Solstice-class ships (Eclipse, Equinox, Silhouette, Solstice and Reflection). Perfect for a spot of mini-golf, a game of lawn bowls or a picnic.

Take a cooking class

Oceania Cruises has outdone itself with Oceania Marina and Oceania Riviera. Both ships are fitted with a culinary centre, containing 12 cooking stations, each with its own burners, cutting board and sink. Classes look at desserts, Italian cuisine, French food and even the flavours of Spain. Meanwhile, onboard Crystal Cruises’ fleet, kids can take advantage of cookie-baking classes.

Be king – or queen – of the world

Here’s one that’ll excite the kids – and big kids at heart. SkyCourse, aboard Carnival Breeze, Magic, Sunshine and Vista, offers a 360-degree view of the world, with the sea 45 metres below. Harness up and swing through the colourful, yet challenging, course.

Feed your artistic desire

Oceania Cruises’ Artist Loft on Oceania Riviera and Oceania Marina features a hands-on course for everybody interested in art – even beginners! Experiment with oils, watercolours, sketching and collages and release the artist within.

Live the TV life

Game of Thrones is to adults what Frozen is to kids. On Crystal Cruises’ Trans-Atlantic Traditions cruise, you’ll be given the chance to explore the filming locations of the gripping fantasy drama on a half-day tour.
