Princess Cruises this week held the keel-laying ceremony for its second Sphere-class ship Star Princess.
This ceremony, held at the Fincantieri Shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, marks the start of construction on the new Sphere-class vessel.
The event included a traditional maritime blessing and ceremony, followed by Princess and Fincantieri executives welding a Princess Medallion into the ship.
This is believed to bring good luck to the vessel and all who sail on her.
“Our multi-decade shipbuilding collaboration continues to progress as we build spectacular ships that are enabled by the most advanced technology available while infusing magnificent Italian craftsmanship and respecting beautiful Princess design heritage,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president.
About Star Princess
When complete, Star Princess will join its sister ship Sun Princess as the largest be built for Princess Cruises.
The Sphere-class ship will be 20 percent larger than any of the line’s existing ships. When complete, Star Princess will be 175,500 tons with the ability to carry 4,300 guests.

- A next-level Piazza area featuring a glass sphere.
- The Princess Arena, a configurable, technologically advanced main theater area.

The new ship will be the second in the Princess fleet to be powered by LNG fuel and is being built with several advanced sustainable innovations.
