Norwegian Cruise Line is increasing its daily gratuity by US50c with the increased rates set to start from April 2020.
For passengers in standard cabins, the daily gratuity will increase to US$15.50 per person, per day, up from US$15.
Those booking full suites or Haven suites will see gratuities rise to $18.50 per person, per day, up from $18.
Passengers already booked for sailings departing after April 1 have until March 31, 2020 to prepay their gratuities at the current rate.
All passengers, aged 3 or over, are required to pay the gratuity.
The line has said that anyone who wishes to contest the service fee must do so by mail after their cruise has ended.
This will be the third year in a row NCL has increased its automatic service fee.
Cruise Passenger is awaiting comment from NCL about whether this will apply to the Norwegian Jewel which is homeported in Australia.
Before booking a cruise make sure you understand how it all works. The initial booking fee covers the basic trip. The cruise line take advantage of every other detail very well, even an Aspirin.
Isn’t it quite convenient that you report this info at this time when in fact it was first announced over 3 weeks ago via email sent to currently booked paasengers. The $15 – $15.50 pp charge is comparable to what other cruise lines charge. This is NOT something NCL decided to change in light of the pandemic.
Our statement lists charges of a beverage service fee of $138.60, food service fee Of $19.80 and a prepaid (?) service fee of $105.00.
Then we are expected to pay a daily gratuity fee as well. Norwegian’s rep did not point that out or explain the difference. Poor customer service!!!
Of course they raised to offset the money they lost in the stock market. Norwegian is such a joke. Your higher ups should be ashamed.
NCL continues to disappoint!
I have a cruise booked for the end of April.
My NCL consultant downplayed any corona concerns with a message “why would you cancel I’ve got on board credit for you”
I I always go to the concierge desk a couple of days before the end of the cruise and ask for the automatic gratuities to be removed from my account. I tip in cash to those who provide an actual service to me- the cabin steward, the waiter, etc. THEY are the ones relying on the tips – the “officers” and other staff get a salary. The cruise fare is expensive enough without them adding on this ridiculous gratuity…who knows WHERE that money goes !
I usually use this cruise line. Airfares have went down. Why take advantage of cruise passengers during a world wide Pandemic. Outrageous. Shame on you!!!
All of YOU obviously haven’t read any notifications or haven’t done your research right. NCL has been giving full refund and cruise credit since last week. Just yesterday like all the other companies an updated notification came out. All people booked for Asia cruises were refunded last month. And the $0.50 cent increase in gratuity is old news announced last month. Just now the news are making it pubic to keep attacking the cruise industry. All the tips and services goes to the staff that treat you like royalty when you go on a cruise. You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to fight the $0.50cents. What can you really buy with that this days??
You people are worst than the Corona.
Does not include the butler in gratuitys either.
I think it’s absolute BS that Norwegian will not offer a refund, yet they’ve already notified us of a price increase! Three other cruise lines gave the choice of cruise credit or refund!
How insensitive and unnecessary of Norwegian Cruises to make these increases at this particular time when the world and the travel industry are in a dire and dangerous period, money -grubbers comes to mind!
Read the contract fine print, my contract states that the gratuities are discretionary not mandatory. You can opt out or lower the gratuity amount if you want. Go to customer services desk and exercise your discretionary rights. Why should you pay for a cruise and then be slugged a 20% gratuity. Cruise lines can pay there staff a decent wage with decent working conditions.
Please tell us what the percent of gratuity actually goes to the working force on the ship , vs what the ship keeps of the percentage as more profit ?? MARK NOLL
The gratuity doesn’t even go to the cabin steward
At a time when they should be “giving away” cruises, they choose to hike up fees!
