Passengers were evacuated from the Viking Orion when a fire broke out onboard as it was moored in Sydney Harbour’s White Bay.
A Viking spokesperson said, “We can confirm that a small fire occurred in a guest stateroom on board the Viking Orion while the ship was docked in Sydney the morning of February 3 (local time). The fire was extinguished within minutes by the ship’s crew, and there were no injuries.
“Viking is fully investigating the incident, and early reports indicate the cause of the fire was electrical, possibly from a corded device. All scheduled operations on board the Viking Orion have continued, and we do not expect any disruption to the current voyage.”
Fire and Rescue NSW were called to White Bay at around 8:10am on Friday after the incident was reported.
FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the ship’s crew were able to contain the fire on level five of the vessel while they awaited rescue teams.
Mr Dewberry said the fire was extinguished and did not spread to adjoining cabins.
FRNSW is working with the ship’s captain and crew to investigate the cause of the fire.
Video footage shows smoke coming out of the back of the ship with some passengers hanging out of their balconies.
