The Sun Princess officially sailed this week, making her maiden voyage after two delays.
She started her maiden voyage on February 28, 2024 – 20 days after her original depature date.
Fincantieri mutually agreed to delay the start due to additional work needed to the vessel at the shipyard. On February 14, Princess announced it had officially taken delivery of Sun Princess from the Italian shipyard.
But they would be cancelling Sun Princess’ maiden voyage to the disappointment of many cruisers.
Affected passengers were offered full refunds. Some were also given air credits if they had already arrived for the maiden voyage.
Finally, the Sun Princess is on her 10-night voyage which departed from Rome. The 10-night cruise will visit ports in Italy, Greece, Turkey and Spain.
“This is an historic day as our new Sun Princess sets sail on her inaugural voyage, and our guests get to experience our sensational, next-level, Love Boat firsthand,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president.
“The ship is a magnificent showcase of advanced design, technology and craftsmanship, with elevated spaces and experiences all focused on taking the Princess vacation experience to a new level.”
What we know about the Sun Princess on her maiden voyage
The Sun Princess is the biggest ship from the cruise line and will be able to host 4300 guests. She is also one of 11 new ships from Carnival Corporation’s fleet that will be powered by Liquified Natural Gas.
It’s also the first Princess ship to cater openly for children and teens with a new activity area called Park19. The area spans over decks 19,20 and 21. It has activities like the first Rollglider on a cruise ship, a climbing structure, a splash zone and more.
There are also new Cabana Suites which have additional private cabana spaces replacing the balconies. They come complete with daybeds and pergolas. Cabin interiors have also been subtly upgraded in all the right ways: USB outlets now sit next to the beds, extra storage options sit within hidden cupboards and the bathrooms.
