Azamara Quest close call with rocks in Marlborough Sounds

 

Azamara Quest currently on its maiden voyage in New Zealand was reported to Maritime New Zealand for sailing close to the rocks in Marlborough Sounds, South Island region.

Carrying 652 guests and 394 crew, Azamara Quest was within 30 metres of rocks as it entered Tory Channel on January 28, 2016 around 9:20 am. A passenger was reported to have witnessed the rocks pretty close to the ship.

Maritime New Zealand has made enquiries about the safety of passengers onboard. As New Zealand’s national maritime organisation, it ensures safety standards are being followed by cruise ships. Check their website here

Azamara Quest spokesperson said they were in touch with Maritime New Zealand providing updates and confirmed that all passengers were safe. “The safety and security of our passengers and crew is our number one priority at all times,” she said.

The ship berthed at Waitohi Wharf, in Picton on Wednesday January 27 and arrives in Napier on January 28.
